"In this film based on a true story, Burt Lancaster player Robert
Stroud, a withdrawn prison inmate who cures a sick bird that flies into his
cell and eventually becomes a world-renowned ornithologist - all while serving
a life sentence. An overbearing warden (Karl Malden) eventually transfers
Stroud to the notoriously brutal prison on Alcatraz, but he is able to continue
his research, abort a riot, start a romance, and eventually get his story out
through a determined reporter (Edmond O'Brien). Directed with his usual sold
craftmanship by John Frankenheimer, Birdman of Alcatraz tells a quietly moving
tale for which Lancaster, Telly Savalas (as one of Stroud's fellow inmates),
and Thelma Ritter (as Stroud's mother) all received Oscar
nominations.

A FISH CALLED
WANDA
PLOT SUMMARY
"John
Cleese plays barrister Archie Leach, who becomes discombobulated when Wanda
(Jamie Lee Curtis), the lady friend of a gangster he is defending, makes a pass
at him. Actually, Wanda wants to extract information out of Cleese about some
diamonds that she and her boyfriend have hoisted with the help of her "brother"
Otto (Kevin Kline) and an animal-rights fread (and mob flunky) named Ken
(Michael Palin). Wanda wants those diamonds for herself, and Ken has already
been subjected to her feminine wiles. Wanda hopes that by playing off her
dreams against all three - - the barrister, the animal-loving mobster and her
gangster boyfriend - - the confusion will allow her to escape with the goodies.
In addition to starring, John Cleese wrote the hilarious
"poke-fun-at-everything" script for this international hit." -

BEVERLY HILLS COP
II
PLOT SUMMARY
"Detroit cop Axel Foley (Eddie Murphey)
has seemingly smoothed out his differences with his Beverly Hills superior
Bogomil (Ronny Cox), but there's trouble ahead for both men, not to mention two
other holdovers from the first Cop film, officers Rosewood (Judge Reinhold) and
Taggart (John Ashton). The "untouchable" heavy this time out is masterminding a
series of violent robberies, committed by leather-freak hoods Dean Stockwell
and Brigitte Nielson. Unaccustomed to this nastiness, Bogomil entreats
street-smart Foley to help find the miscreants. But mean-spirited chief of
police Lutz (Allen Garfield) will brook no interference from outsiders -
especially the profanely insouciant Mr. Foley." - iTunes

THE TEN
COMMANDMENTS
PLOT SUMMARY
"Based
on the Holy Scriptures, with additional dialogue by several other hands, The
Ten Commandments was the last film directed by Cecil B. DeMille. The story
relates the life of Moses, from the time he was discovered in the bullrushes as
an infant by the pharoah's daughter, to his long, hard struggle to free the
Hebrews from their slavery at the hands of the Egyptians. Moses (Charlton
Heston) starts out "in solid" as Pharoah's adopted son (and a wiz at designing
pyramids, dispensing such construction-site advice as "Blood makes poor
mortar"), but when he discovers his true Hebrew heritage, he attempts to make
life easier for his people. Banished by his jealous half-brother Rameses (Yul
Brynner), Moses returns fully bearded to Pharoah's court, warning that he's had
a message from God and that the Egyptians had better free the Hebrews
post-haste if they know what's good for them. Only after the Deadly Plagues
have decimated Egypt does Rameses give in. But Moses rescues his people with a
little Divine legerdemain by parting the seas. Later, Moses is again confronted
by God on Mr. Sinai, who delivers unto him the Ten Commandments. Meanwhile, the
Hebrews, led by the duplicitous Dathan (Edward G. Robinson), are forgetting
their religion and behaving like libertines. "Where's your Moses now?" brays
Dathan in the manner of a Lower East Side gangster. He soon finds out. A remake
of his 1923 silent film, DeMille's The Ten Commandments may not be the most
subtle and sophisticated entertainment ever concocted, but it tells its story
with a clarity and vitality that few Biblical scholars have ever been able to
duplicate. It is very likely the most eventful 219 minutes ever recorded to
film - and who's to say that Nefertiri (Anne Baxter) didn't make speeches like,
"Oh, Moses, Moses, you splendid, stubborn, adorable fool"?" -

DIRTY
DANCING
PLOT SUMMARY
"A
teenage girl learns about love, adult responsibility, and how to do The Dirty
Boogie in this romantic drama. In 1963, "Baby" Houseman (Jennifer Grey) is a
17-year-old spending the summer with her family at a resort hotel in the
Catskills; she plans on being in the Peace Corps next summer, so this is
expected to be her last summer as a carefree adolescent. Baby doesn't get along
with her older sister, Lisa (Jane Brucker), and she's bored to tears by most of
the older guests at the resort. However, one night Baby hears what sounds like
a party going on in the employee's dormitory, and she pokes her head in to
discover most of the hotel staff enjoying the sort of close dancing that would
get you kicked out of the senior prom in no time flat. Baby is particularly
struck by handsome Johnny Castle (Patrick Swayze), a dancer in the resort's
floor show, and falls head over heels in love, wanting to be near him. When
Johnny's dance partner, Penny (Cynthia Rhodes), finds herself pregnant after a
fling with one of the waiters, Baby volunteers to learn her steps and take her
place; however, Baby's father, Dr. Jake Houseman (Jerry Orbach), will have none
of it, convinced that Johnny is a low life and that his daughter is too young
to understand her own feelings. Dirty Dancing was a surprise box-office hit,
and the soundtrack album was an even bigger success, spawning several hit
singles and inspiring a top-drawing concert tour featuring several of its
artists." - iTunes
